Employment or Consulting Opportunity - Conservation Educator
Part-time Contract (October 2010 to June 2011)
The Canadian Parks and Wilderness Society - New Brunswick Chapter (CPAWS NB) is the provincial branch of a national charitable conservation organization. CPAWS NB is based in Fredericton. CPAWS NB encourages the protection of our province’s wild ecosystems in protected areas, and works to ensure that nature comes first in parks management. CPAWS NB is looking for an experienced educator and self-starter to revise and implement a school and youth group nature education program between October, 2010 and June 2011. The contract may be renewed pending future funding.
This contract will appeal to those who are interested in working in a nature conservation field, are self-motivated to initiate and complete tasks, and can exhibit strong leadership abilities in the development and implementation of an educational program. The contract offers flexible hours based on part-time work for nine months. Depending on qualifications and work skills of applicants, we may consider a job-sharing arrangement, or we may consider a person who is not located in the Fredericton area.
Responsibilities include:
- Developing and delivering activity based presentations in English and French to children in grades three to six, scouts and guides and other youth groups in New Brunswick;
- Writing and designing educational materials that will support the presentations, based on CPAWS’ existing templates and materials;
- Promoting the program through school systems in the province, among youth group organizations, through individual contacts and through various media (web sites, newsletters and others);
- Organizing the schedule of presentations;
- Evaluating and reporting on the progress of the program periodically; and
- Writing a final summary report on the project.
Required Qualifications are:
- A combination of education and experience in any of the following fields: conservation education, natural sciences, education, communications;
- Exceptional communication, writing and public speaking skills;
- Exceptional organizational skills and ability to track and report on the details of various aspects of the project;
- Proven leadership abilities and ability to take initiative;
- Ability to work independently with limited supervision and to develop own work plan to achieve assigned project deliverables;
- Access to own computer
- A valid New Brunswick drivers license, own transportation (travel expenses will be covered), the ability to travel throughout New Brunswick;
- Proficiency with Word, Publisher, PowerPoint and/or other similar software;
- Experience networking with (or an established network of contacts among) teachers and/or youth group leaders; and
- Commitment to and knowledge of nature conservation, parks or protected areas issues.
Assets would include the ability to communicate in both English and French, and experience in fundraising or proposal writing.
